Detroit Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez arrived at the team's spring training complex Monday and is scheduled to participate in his first workout since tearing the medial meniscus in his left knee earlier this month.

Martinez, who underwent surgery Feb. 10, isn't expected to resume full baseball activities until mid-March, but the club remains hopeful he'll be ready for Opening Day.

"Vic was in great shape prior to the surgery," Tigers athletic trainer Kevin Rand said following the procedure. "That should really bode well for his rehab."

Martinez, 36, hit a career-high 32 homers with a league-leading .974 OPS in 2014. Detroit re-signed the switch-hitting veteran to a four-year, $68-million contract this winter.
