Spangenberg will compete for a spot on the bench for the Padres this spring, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Analysis:

Spangenberg was a late season call-up in 2014 and posted a .290/.306/.452 slash line in 20 games with the Padres. His bat isn't necessarily the key to him making the big league roster, however. Spangenberg could provide versatility and depth to San Diego's infield, which is limited defensively. If he makes the big league club, he figures to be a bench option at second or third base.
