Rangers' Profar expected to miss season after labrum surgery

The Texas Rangers braced for the worst, and on Monday it was confirmed: Jurickson Profar will likely miss the season for the second straight year.

Profar, once considered the top prospect in baseball, underwent surgery on his right labrum in Arlington and is expected to need the entire season to recover, the team announced.

The 22-year-old infielder didn't play at any level last year after suffering three separate shoulder tears. He elected against surgery in favor of rest, and appeared to be making strides in his recovery until a recent MRI revealed increased strain on the subscapularis muscle of his throwing arm.

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels refused to place blame on Profar when speaking to reporters last week.

"He did a tremendous job, saw a lot of results. And he's hurt," Daniels said during a press conference with new manager Jeff Banister. "In a lot of ways this was the tougher call to make. He put the work in and it hasn't worked out. Fortunately, he's still 22 and we will get him back, we will get him out there, it's just going to take longer than any of us want."
