Reds' Bailey still not cleared to throw off mound

The Cincinnati Reds held their first official workout for pitchers and catchers Thursday, but right-hander Homer Bailey will remain a limited participant through the nascent stages of spring training.

Bailey underwent surgery in September on the flexor mass tendon near his right elbow and has not yet been cleared to throw off a mound, reports MLB.com's Mark Sheldon.

"It takes a little longer for him to get loose, he's still breaking up scar tissue in his elbow and things of that nature," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "But he feels good. We haven't had a setback since the surgery date, and I think at this point in time, I haven't discounted having him open the season on our active roster."

Bailey, who signed a six-year, $105-million extension with the Reds last February, made just 23 starts in an injury-shortened 2014 campaign, fashioning a 3.71 ERA (97 ERA+) across 145 2/3 innings.
