Phelps will pitch as a starter in spring training but does not currently project to crack the Opening Day rotation, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.

Analysis:

Henderson Alvarez, Mat Latos, Jarred Cosart, Dan Haren and Tom Koehler project as the Marlins' top five starters, so Phelps will compete with Brad Hand to claim a role as a swingman. Last year with the Yankees, Phelps made 17 starts and 15 relief appearances, compiling a 4.41 ERA and 1.42 WHIP over 113 innings. He seems likely to break camp with the club following his acquisition in the offseason, but will have to earn his role this spring.
