Royals' Holland on extension: 'I think both sides would like to work something out'

Kansas City Royals closer Greg Holland is finally being paid like an elite closer, but the right-hander wouldn't be opposed to a bit more security when it comes to his contract.

Holland and the Royals avoided arbitration earlier this month with a one-year, $8.25-million deal, and he admits the two sides have expressed an openness to a possible extension.

"I think both sides would like to work something out at some point," Holland told Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star. "But it’s a fine line to get both sides happy and to feel comfortable."

The Royals have made a strong financial commitment to their bullpen, as Holland, Wade Davis and Luke Hochevar combine to make $19.25 million this season, something Holland acknowledges could complicate working out a long-term deal.

"Both sides were interested," Holland said. "And, I hope, still are. But it's a business. We've got a lot of money in our bullpen right now."

Holland, who has one more year of arbitration eligibility remaining before hitting free agency in 2017,  owns a 1.32 ERA and has collected 93 saves over the past two seasons.
