Report: Brewers, Padres have discussed trade involving Luis Sardinas

Jesse Johnson / USA TODAY Sports

General manager A.J. Preller has wasted no time reshaping the San Diego Padres roster in just six months on the job and it appears the 37-year-old executive isn't completely satisfied with his current lineup.

Preller has reportedly discussed a potential deal with the Milwaukee Brewers involving their recently acquired shortstop Luis Sardinas, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, though he notes that there has been no recent talks between the two sides.

Rosenthal also reported that Preller has been in touch with the Philadelphia Phillies regarding left-hander Cole Hamels, however there is doubt that the Padres have the resources to build a strong enough package to bring about a deal.

The Brewers acquired Sardinas from the Texas Rangers earlier this month in exchange for pitcher Yovani Gallardo. The 21-year-old switch-hitting infielder appeared in 43 games last season, hitting .261/.303/.313 with six doubles and five stolen bases.

San Diego currently project to use Alexi Amarista at shortstop this season with utility man Clint Barmes as an option off the bench. Amarista appeared at five different positions last season, logging 73 games at short. The 25-year-old slashed .239/.286/.314 with five home runs and 12 stolen bases in 148 games.
