Giants release Marco Scutaro

Marco Scutaro's baseball career is likely over.

The veteran infielder was designated for assignment by the San Francisco Giants on Jan. 21, and was released Wednesday, according to the league's transactions page.

Scutaro was limited to only five games in 2014 due to back problems, which ultimately led to December back surgery.

The Giants still owe the 39-year-old $6 million for 2015, but needed his spot on the 40-man roster while he recovers from surgery for new outfielder Nori Aoki.

Scutaro boasts a career .277 average with 77 home runs and 509 RBIs. He was also named the 2012 National League Championship Series MVP and an All-Star in 2013.
