Report: Mets, Mejia avoid arbitration with 1-year deal

The New York Mets avoided arbitration with right-hander Jenrry Mejia by agreeing Wednesday to a one-year, $2.595-million contract for the 2015 season, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports.

Mejia opened the 2014 season in the rotation, but was relegated to the bullpen in May, when he immediately took over as closer in the absence of Bobby Parnell.

The 25-year-old proceeded to craft a 2.72 ERA and 1.42 WHIP while posting a 24.3 percent strikeout rate over 56 1/3 innings as a reliever.

Parnell is expected to assume closing duties once he rejoins the team, but Mejia said earlier this offseason he's prepared for whatever job manager Terry Collins hands him.

"Whatever job they giving to me I gotta be there to help my team," Mejia told the New York Daily News. "I can throw seventh inning, eighth inning, ninth inning whatever, I got to be ready to play the game that's all."
