Marlins announce signing of Ichiro to 1-year deal
The Miami Marlins made the signing of veteran outfielder Ichiro Suzuki official Tuesday night.
Suzuki, who spent the past two-plus seasons with the New York Yankees, agreed to a one-year deal with the Marlins and is likely to serve as the club's fourth outfielder.
It was previously reported that Suzuki would earn around $2 million.
Suzuki heads to the National League following a 14-year run in the AL that began in 2001 when he was named Rookie of the Year and MVP as a member of the Seattle Mariners.
Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria, team president David Samson, president of baseball operations Michael Hill and general manager Dan Jennings are set to introduce him at a press conference in Japan on Wednesday, according to Juan C. Rodriguez of the Sun Sentinel.
Suzuki will become the first Asian-born player to play for the Marlins. He's 56 hits shy of 3,000 for his career and 13 stolen bases away from 500.
The 10-time All-Star, who is a career .317 hitter, slashed .284/.324/.340 in 143 games with the Yankees in 2014.
