Los Angeles Angels right-hander Garrett Richards continues to make progress in his recovery from knee surgery and could be ready by Opening Day, general manager Jerry Dipoto said Monday.

Richards, who underwent the procedure last August and was initially expected to miss six-to-nine months, was doubtful to return in time for spring training as recently as last month.

Dipoto, however, said Richards is steadily improving his running and is throwing five times a week from distances of 125 and 150 with no reported issues.

The Angels GM told the Orange County Register he's optimistic Richards will be back by the team's April 6 opener or sometime during the first month at the latest.

Richards, 26, suffered a torn patellar tendon while attempting to cover first base during a game last summer.
