Report: Marlins hoping to land 2017 All-Star Game

Steve Mitchell / USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Marlins are vying for the 2017 All-Star Game despite the fact that it would mean a National League team hosting for a third consecutive season.

The Cincinnati Reds will hold this year's midsummer classic at Great American Ballpark, while the San Diego Padres were recently awarded the event for 2016. A Marlins source told Craig Davis of the South Florida Sun Sentinel that the team is cautiously optimistic of their chances.

Complicating the Marlins case is the fact that Thomas Boswell of the Washington Post reported last week that the Washington Nationals plan to announce that they've been awarded the 2018 All-Star Game at the end of the month - though Davis notes incoming commissioner Rob Manfred indicated that alternating leagues is no longer a priority.

Marlins Park opened in 2012 and is the newest stadium in the majors. The All-Star Game has never been held in Miami in the organization's 22-year history.
