Diamondbacks 'out' on James Shields, says GM

Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Dave Stewart indicated on Thursday that his team is no longer pursuing right-hander James Shields, the top player still available in free agency, according to Jack Magruder of FOX Sports.

Stewart - who took over as general manager in September - quashed the possibility of signing Shields less than two weeks after Ken Rosenthal reported that the Diamondbacks remained "in the mix" for the former All-Star.

Though the Diamondbacks are no longer interested in obtaining Shields' services, one MLB executive recently told ESPN's Jayson Stark "a lot of teams [are] jumping back in" for the 33-year-old right-hander. Shields was reportedly seeking a deal worth more than $100 million when the 2014 campaign ended. However, the pitcher now appears poised to receive a considerably smaller deal.

Stewart, however, has already tinkered with his rotation this offseason, acquiring right-hander Jeremy Hellickson from the Tampa Bay Rays before shipping left-hander Wade Miley to the Boston Red Sox.
