Cishek hoping to stick with Marlins for the long term

Miami Marlins closer Steve Cishek isn't looking for a change in scenery.

The right-hander avoided arbitration on Friday by agreeing to a one-year, $6.65-million deal with the Marlins, though Cishek remains hopeful he'll eventually land something longer term with the organization that selected him with the 166th pick in the 2007 draft.

"I was interested in a multiyear deal," Cishek told Joe Frisaro of MLB.com. "I've been with this organization since 2007. I've been treated very well. I just have a lot of pride in the organization. I came up with a lot of these guys now with the major league team. It would mean the world to me to be able to win a championship with the guys you came up with in the organization that drafted you."

The 28-year-old says he's encouraged by what the front office has done this offseason - acquiring Michael Morse, Martin Prado, Mat Latos, Dee Gordon, and Dan Haren - and believes the new additions will complement an already solid up-and-coming core.

"For me, seeing the progress the team has made has been huge," Cishek said. "I can't really describe it. When you first get called up, you're just happy to be here. After a while, that gets old, and all you want to do is win. All I want to do is win. I think we can definitely do that with this ballclub."

Cishek has been excellent during his five-year tenure with the Marlins, registering a 2.65 ERA and 284 strikeouts in 252 career appearances. He's hoping another productive campaign will help him earn the long-term deal he's looking for.

"I love the philosophy that (manager) Mike (Redmond) and (general manager) D.J. (Dan Jennings) have brought in, and I just want to be a part of what they're doing here," Cishek said. "Hopefully, if I can put together another solid year, maybe we can have that (contract) talk next year."
