Phillies assistant GM on trading Cole Hamels to Padres: 'You never know'

Bill Streicher / USA TODAY Sports

The Cole Hamels trade winds are swirling again.

Philadelphia Phillies assistant general manager Scott Proefrock was a guest Sunday on MLB Network Radio, and revealed the latest gossip surrounding the left-hander.

Proefrock said more than four clubs are kicking the tires on Hamels, including some mystery teams that haven't been mentioned in mainstream media. Proefrock would not comment on the level of kicking or mention specific teams that have inquired, however.

The Boston Red Sox, St. Louis Cardinals, Texas Rangers and San Diego Padres are among the teams reported to have the most interest in Hamels. Proefrock specifically addressed rumors about the Padres' intentions stating, "you never know ... these things don't happen overnight."

Proefrock also dispelled the myth the free-agent market was holding up a potential Hamels trade. Max Scherzer and James Shields are still available to the highest bidder, leaving teams looking for high-end starting pitching with options still without trading away assets.

Hamels, who went 9-9 with a 2.46 ERA in 30 starts, has four years remaining on his current deal and is owed $94 million.
