Report: Tigers, Price have not discussed long-term extension

The Detroit Tigers acquired David Price from the Tampa Bay Rays in July, fully aware the talented left-hander would become a free agent after the 2015 campaign.

Nearly five months have passed since Price first arrived in Detroit, however, and the club still has yet to broach a long-term extension with the four-time All-Star, according to Jon Morosi of FOX Sports.

Price stated in October than an extension was the last thing on his mind, and the 2012 American League Cy Young award winner may be increasingly inclined to wait for free agency after watching Jon Lester sign a six-year, $155-million deal with the Chicago Cubs earlier this offseason. A mammoth deal is also looming for Max Scherzer - whom the Tigers are not believed to be pursuing - and his new contract could help bolster the market for Price's services next winter.

Though the Tigers would presumably like to re-sign Price, who fashioned a 3.26 ERA over 34 starts last season, the club has already committed more than $100 million in each of the next two seasons and may not be able to make him an offer enticing enough to keep him from free agency.
