Report: Rays not looking to trade Evan Longoria

The Tampa Bay Rays have unloaded a heap of veteran talent under newly promoted general manager Matt Silverman, but the club reportedly isn't looking to do the same with third baseman Evan Longoria.

One National League general manager reportedly inquired about Longoria earlier this offseason, but the Rays insisted he's not available, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe. Longoria, the third overall selection in 2006, remains under contract through at least 2022 and is set to earn $11 million next season.

Though the Rays have overhauled their roster considerably since Silverman took over, Longoria's disappointing performance last season all but ensured he'll be with the team for at least one more year. Even if the Rays determined that Longoria won't factor into the club's long-term plans, Tampa Bay would presumably wait for the three-time All-Star to recoup some of his value before trading him.

Longoria stumbled through the worst season of his career in 2014, managing career worsts in on-base percentage (.320), slugging percentage (.404), isolated power (.151), walk rate (8.1 percent), and defensive runs saved (-5). He helped assuage some injury concerns by appearing in a career-high 162 games, but Longoria also managed just 3.4 WAR - easily the lowest mark of his career outside his injury-shortened 2012 campaign.
