Mets' Wright invites sons of slain NYPD officer to attend spring training

New York Mets third baseman David Wright is doing his part to help brighten the spirits of two boys who are dealing with the loss of their father.

Wright reached out to the sons of NYPD officer Rafael Ramos, who was one of two officers murdered Saturday, and offered his condolences during a 15-minute phone call.

"You should have seen them, what a reaction," a police department source told Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News. "They were really smiling. It gave them a few minutes to smile and be excited.

"They are really looking forward to meeting him and spending time with the team."

The two boys will travel to Florida in early March and will join Wright and his Mets teammates in the dugout in full uniform for spring training games.

For Wright, the tragedy hit close to home, as his father was also a cop.

"He talked about how he idolized his father who was a police officer and he couldn't imagine how hard it was for these boys," a source close to Wright said. "When he got off the phone with the boys he told me it was one of the most meaningful calls he has ever made."
