Orioles' Davis receives therapeutic-use exemption for Adderall

Chris Davis won't take the field for the Baltimore Orioles on Opening Day as he completes the 25-game suspension he incurred in August after testing positive for amphetamines for a second time.

The first baseman will, however, be free to use Adderall next season - the drug he insists triggered the positive test - after receiving a therapeutic-use exemption from Major League Baseball for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Davis recently informed Orioles manager Buck Showalter that the league granted him permission to use the drug in 2015, Showalter told Eduardo A. Encina of The Baltimore Sun on Tuesday.

Davis received exemptions from the league when he played for the Texas Rangers earlier in his career, but was denied permission to use the drug shortly after he was acquired by the Orioles in July of 2011. It is believed Davis did not have an exemption in either 2012 or 2013, according to Encina.

Davis, an All-Star in 2013, appeared in 127 games last season, hitting just .196/.300/.404 with 26 home runs and 173 strikeouts in 525 plate appearances.
