David Kohl / USA TODAY Sports

Brad Penny is hoping to crack a major league rotation for just the second time since 2012.

The veteran pitcher reportedly agreed to a minor league contract with the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday with a chance to compete for a rotation spot in the spring, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports

Penny has thrown just 54 innings in the majors over the last three seasons, while compiling a 2-2 record and 6.33 ERA split between being a starter and reliever.

The 36-year-old appeared in eight games with the Miami Marlins last season, going 2-1 with a 6.58 ERA and 1.80 WHIP. He also made five starts with Triple-A New Orleans, going 2-2 with a 2.28 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 27 2/3 innings.

Chicago represents the eighth organization of Penny's 14-year career and the seventh since 2009.
