Melky Cabrera is officially a member of the Chicago White Sox as the team announced a three-year, $42-million deal on Tuesday.

The 30-year-old outfielder is one of a number of key pieces that general manger Rick Hahn has brought in during an offseason makeover as he reworks the roster on Chicago's south side.

"Melky provides us with a professional hitter, who reaches base on a consistent basis," Hahn said in a release. "We think he slides into [manager] Robin's [Ventura] batting order perfectly and adds depth to a very versatile lineup. We are very excited about his addition to our roster."

Cabrera, who will receive $13 million in 2015, $14 million in 2016 and $15 million in 2017, spent the last two seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays and posted one of the best years of his career in 2014. In 139 games, the switch-hitter slashed .301/.351/.458 with 16 home runs, 35 doubles and 73 RBIs before his season was cut short due to a fractured right pinkie finger.

The move likely spells the end for Dayan Viciedo in left field. Though, the destination remains unclear. The White Sox had reportedly been in talks with the Seattle Mariners regarding a trade - the same team that offered Cabrera a three-year deal - but talks appear to have slowed.
