Rockies' Hawkins to retire after 2015 season

Ron Chenoy / USA TODAY Sports

Colorado Rockies reliever LaTroy Hawkins' 21st season will be his last.

The soon-to-be 42-year-old revealed during an interview Friday on MLB Network that he will retire at the end of next season.

Selected in the seventh round of the 1991 draft by the Minnesota Twins, Hawkins' next appearance on the mound will be the 1,001th of his career.

The right-hander has spent the majority of his career as a middle reliever but served as the Rockies' closer last season, earning 23 saves and posting a 3.31 ERA in 57 appearances. He's scheduled to reprise the same role next season.
