Report: Mets haven't ruled out Everth Cabrera as shortstop option

New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson recently admitted his opportunities to acquire a shortstop via trade are "increasingly limited" this offseason.

The Mets, however, haven't ruled out the possibility of signing free agent Everth Cabrera, an All-Star in 2013 who was non-tendered by the San Diego Padres earlier this month, reports Newsday's Marc Carig.

Cabrera's tenure with the Padres ended unceremoniously after the 28-year-old regressed last season and incurred a charge of resisting arrest in November after being stopped for suspicion of driving under the influence of marijuana.

Wilmer Flores appears likely to start at shortstop for the Mets on Opening Day, but the 23-year-old doesn't seem to be a long-term solution at the position.
