Jeff Luhnow has spent the last several years trying to revive a moribund franchise, dragging the Houston Astros through a rebuilding process that has, at times, seemed endless. It appears, however, the general manager will be around to relish the fruits of his labor.

Luhnow, who took over as general manager in December of 2011, received a contract extension within the last year, sources recently told Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle. Though Luhnow declined comment Tuesday at the winter meetings, team owner Jim Crane was effusive in his praise of the executive.

“I think Jeff’s doing a good job,” Crane said. “He’s following the plan and has shown marked improvement, and you know, hopefully with some more additions, we can get where we want to get quickly.”

The Astros piled up three consecutive 100-loss seasons from 2011 to 2013 before showing marked improvement this past year, finishing with a 70-92 record. The young talent accumulated by Luhnow is starting to pay dividends at the major league level, and the impending arrivals of Mark Appel and Carlos Correa provide even more reason for optimism in Houston.

“Yeah, I think he does a nice job," Crane added. "He’s good with the people and I like the things he does. His job is to keep the chemistry with his guys. And I think he’ll have some very good chemistry with A.J. (manager A.J. Hinch), you can already see that. A.J.’s been up in the room all day. We have very good input and very good feel for each other, so I like what I’m seeing now.”
