The Houston Astros continue to make headlines this offseason, and the latest hot stove rumor is linking them to free-agent shortstop Jed Lowrie.

Sources tell Brian McTaggart of MLB.com that the Astros are pursuing a reunion with the 30-year-old infielder in an effort to shore up a position that's produced the second-fewest wins in the American League since 2013, according to FanGraphs.

Lowrie is coming off a down year in Oakland after two straight seasons as an above-average run producer at his position.

The switch-hitting shortstop clubbed a career high 16 homers in just 97 games with the Astros in 2012, but a nerve issue in his ankle caused Lowrie to miss three months of the second half. He was traded that offseason to the Athletics, where he experienced inconsistent production over two seasons.

Lowrie is among the top free-agent shortstops available this winter and is rumored to be in line for a multi-year deal. The Astros are also said to be pursuing reliever David Robertson after missing out on the services of left-hander Andrew Miller, as well as third baseman Chase Headley.

Perhaps in an effort to bolster his market, Lowrie is apparently open to playing second base or third, according to a report from the Houston Chronicle.
