Report: Brewers, Marlins interested in Allen Craig

Allen Craig, relegated to an uncertain role with the Boston Red Sox, remains among the club's likeliest trade candidates this winter and the 30-year-old is already attracting a number of suitors.

Both the Milwaukee Brewers and Miami Marlins have expressed interest in Craig, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe. Craig logged just 29 games with the Red Sox in 2014 following a midseason trade from the St. Louis Cardinals.

Though the former All-Star remains under contract for at least three more seasons, he likely doesn't factor into the organization's long-term plans. Mike Napoli is currently installed as the regular first baseman, and Craig is unlikely to receive many opportunities in the outfield with Rusney Castillo, Shane Victorino, Yoenis Cespedes, Hanley Ramirez, and Mookie Betts all competing for playing time. Craig struggled mightily last season while battling discomfort in his troublesome left foot, as he managed a disappointing .594 OPS (66 OPS+) with eight home runs over 126 games.

The Brewers may nevertheless view Craig an appealing complement to first baseman Adam Lind, who struggles against left-handed pitching. Craig, conversely, boasts a career .285/.323/.514 line against southpaws over parts of five seasons in the majors. Craig may be expected to serve a similar role with the Marlins, as incumbent first baseman Garrett Jones also possesses pronounced platoon splits.
