Report: Diamondbacks, Yasmany Tomas agree on 6-year, $68.5M contract

The Arizona Diamondbacks have reportedly secured the services of coveted Cuban star outfielder Yasmany Tomas.

Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com reports the contract is worth six years and $68.5 million. The deal is pending a physical and reportedly includes an opt-out after four years. It would mark the richest free-agent contract in franchise history.

Tomas, 24, was being pursued by several clubs, including the Atlanta Braves, San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants, and reports suggested the power-hitting outfielder might command a record-breaking payday for a Cuban-born player.

His deal, however, falls short of the seven-year $72.5-million contract the Boston Red Sox awarded Rusney Castillo in August.

The reported signing marks the first major transaction triggered by new Diamondbacks general manager Dave Stewart. The former big league pitcher also traded for right-hander Jeremy Hellickson from the Tampa Bay Rays last month.

Stewart is hoping Tomas empowers a Diamondbacks club that had the worst record in baseball last year. Tomas projects to have plus-power at the major league level, though he hit just 30 home runs over 205 games for the Havana Industriales. He has never played more than 69 games in Serie Nacional's 90-game regular season, according to Sanchez.

Tomas is expected to occupy left field after Stewart said earlier in the offseason that Mark Trumbo would be transitioned to right. The move further crowds an Arizona outfield that already includes Trumbo, center fielder A.J. Pollack and 2014 rookies Ender Inciarte and David Peralta.
