Report: Mets monitoring Red Sox's Bogaerts to possibly fill void at shortstop

The New York Mets are closely monitoring the fallout from the free-agent deals that brought Pablo Sandoval and Hanley Ramirez to the Boston Red Sox.

The Mets have made it no secret they're in the market for a shortstop this offseason, and now have Xander Bogaerts on their radar, reports Michael Hurcomb of CBS Sports.

"It's not like we're knocking down their door to see if (Bogaerts) is available," a source reportedly told the New York Post. "But we'll wait and see how things shake out."

Ramirez could displace Bogaerts as Boston's everyday shortstop, but a move to the outfield is also a possibility. That would compound another problem for the Red Sox, though, as the team is already rich with outfield talent. Boston is expected to move outfielders for starting pitching help, which is where the Mets come in.

Jonathon Niese is reportedly on the trade block after butting heads with manager Terry Collins, and the left-hander would fit nicely in the middle of Boston's rotation. Veteran right-hander Bartolo Colon also appears available.

Bogaerts, 22, struggled at the plate in his first full big-league season, hitting .240 with 12 home runs and 46 RBIs.
