Report: Indians have contacted Kendrys Morales, Chris Denorfia

Kelvin Kuo / USA TODAY Sports

The Cleveland Indians are waving the white flag in regards to contract talks with free-agent third baseman Chase Headley.

The team is now focusing on more affordable free agents like Kendrys Morales and Chris Denorfia, reports Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

The Indians have reached out to both free agents this offseason after deeming Headley too expensive, a result of a surge in his value following Pablo Sandoval signing in Boston.

Morales, who hit .218 with eight home runs and 42 RBIs splitting time between the Minnesota Twins and Seattle Mariners, can play first base but is perhaps more comfortable as a designated hitter.

Denorfia can play all three outfielder positions and would likely assume a platoon role with David Murphy in right, Hoynes notes. The 34-year-old is known for his above-average glove, but hit only .230 last season.
