Padres 'heavily focused' on trades

Charles LeClaire / USA TODAY Sports

After striking out on signing free-agent third baseman Pablo Sandoval, San Diego Padres general manager A.J. Preller is heavily focused on trades, according to Corey Brock of MLB.com

Brock notes that the Padres haven't completely abandoned the free-agent market but are more inclined to find upgrades by dealing with another team. Preller has reportedly "kicked the tires" on a number of trade scenarios, and has been linked to outfielders Jay Bruce of the Cincinnati Reds and Yoenis Cespedes of the Boston Red Sox.

Earlier this month, Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reported that the Padres were listening on offers on a trio of pitchers - Tyson Ross, Andrew Cashner and Ian Kennedy.

San Diego has issued a bid on 24-year-old Cuban outfielder Yasmany Tomas, though a source told Brock that the Padres offer is not the highest current bid.

If the Padres are to have a legitimate shot at reaching the postseason for the first time since 2006, they'll need to upgrade their offense. San Diego ranked 28th in home runs (109) and 30th in average (.226), on-base percentage (.292), and slugging (.292) in 2014.
