Pirates trade Ike Davis to Athletics for international slot money

Charles LeClaire / USA TODAY Sports

The Oakland Athletics continued to add power to their lineup by acquiring first baseman Ike Davis from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for international slot money, the team announced Sunday.

Pittsburgh acquired Davis from the New York Mets in April and the left-handed hitter platooned with Gaby Sanchez at first base for the majority of the season. In 131 games, Davis slashed .235/.343/.378 with 10 home runs, 46 RBIs and 74 strikeouts.

Pittsburgh designated Davis for assignment on Thursday as Pedro Alvarez is expected to move to first base next season.

Two years removed from a 32 home run, 90 RBI season, the 27-year-old Davis is likely to be used strictly as a platoon with Oakland as he owns a career .196 average in 433 at-bats against southpaws.

It's the second time the Athletics have acquired a first baseman this week. Oakland signed Billy Butler to a three-year, $30-million contract on Wednesday.

In a corresponding move after acquiring Davis, the A's designated Andrew Brown for assignment.
