Report: Rays looking to add backup catcher

Charles LeClaire / USA TODAY Sports

The Tampa Bay Rays have been very active early this offseason, and that trend should continue leading up to the winter meetings.

The Rays are looking to add a backup catcher either through free agency or by trade, reports Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.

Some of the options on the open market include A.J. Pierzynski, Geovany Soto and David Ross.

As for trade options, the possibilities are endless, as not many teams consider their secondary backstop a franchise player.

The Rays have already shipped pitchers Jeremy Hellickson and Joel Peralta out of town this offseason and lost their manager, Joe Maddon, to the Chicago Cubs.

The club is also in the process of hiring a new manager to replace Maddon.
