This Day in Baseball History

Reuters

1943 - Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis suspends Philadelphia Phillies owner William Cox indefinitely after he admits to illegally betting on his own team. He would never be reinstated to baseball and was forced to sell the team to the Carpenter family, who would run the club until 1981.

1964 - Warren Spahn is purchased by the New York Mets from the Milwaukee Braves. The Hall-of-Fame southpaw, who spent 25 years with the Braves franchise, would go 4-12 for the Mets in 1965, prompting his release.

2011 - The Oakland Athletics trade left-hander Gio Gonzalez and pitching prospect Robert Gilliam to the Washington Nationals for lefty Tommy Milone, catcher Derek Norris, right-hander Brad Peacock and minor-league hurler A.J. Cole. Gonzalez would sign a five-year, $42-million extension with the Nats shortly after the trade.
