Rangers GM: 'We're not going to outbid people in the free-agent market'

Texas Rangers general manager Jon Daniels will continue to resist the lure of bidding on high-priced free agents this offseason.

Despite plenty of needs, the Rangers' roster is already saddled with their fair share of big contracts (Prince Fielder, Adrian Beltre, Elvis Andrus, Shin-Soo Choo and Yu Darvish are set to make a combined $94.45 million next season) and Daniels is reluctant to add any more.

"We're not going to outbid people in the free-agent market and throw a lot of money out there," Daniels told T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com. "We're not going to jump out unless the right deal is there. Most likely, we'll play the free-agent market later than sooner. If you take the patient approach, eventually you should get a fair deal later on."

The Rangers have an opening in left field and need help behind the plate in addition to Robinson Chirinos, though Daniels concedes the market is thin.

"If there was the right guy out there, ideally yes," Daniels said. "But there are not a lot of great fits out there, so we're not going to force it. We've looked at both [trades and free agents], but I'm not overly optimistic of the possibility of finding the right guy."
