Report: Marlins effort to sign high-end free agents could be hindered by past trade

A blockbuster trade two years ago could be inhibiting the Miami Marlins from signing high-end free agents this offseason.

Buster Olney of ESPN is reporting that rival evaluators believe the Marlins trade of Mark Buehrle and Jose Reyes to the Toronto Blue Jays in 2012 after they signed multi-year deals is turning off prospective free agents.

Reyes agreed to a six-year, $106-million deal. Buehrle inked a four-year, $58-million contract on the same day. Both were packaged to the Blue Jays just a year later, after the Marlins went a disappointing 69-93 to finish dead last in the division.

Miami were already snubbed once this offseason after reportedly offering free-agent Adam LaRoche a two-year, $20 million deal. However, the first baseman signed with the Chicago White Sox for $5 million more on Friday.

Luckily for the Marlins, Giancarlo Stanton likes their money.
