Tigers GM on chance of signing Scherzer: 'I think our odds were better last spring'

Max Scherzer's name hasn't been very prominent early in free agency, and his former general manager isn't overly optimistic about his chances of retaining the right-hander's services.

"Well, anything's possible ... I think our odds were better last spring," Detroit Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said during a radio appearance Friday. "Is there a chance, sure, but It's one we're not counting on at this point."

The lack of rumors surrounding Scherzer early in free agency shouldn't be mistaken for a lack of interest. His agent, Scott Boras, is notorious for waiting until after the winter meetings before negotiating contracts for his clients.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal is predicting the Washington Nationals, New York Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Dodgers will all express interest in Scherzer at some point this offseason.

The 2013 Cy Young Award winner went 18-5 with a 3.15 ERA in 33 starts for the Tigers last season, and is competing with Jon Lester and James Shields, among others, on the open market.
