Giants designate Juan Gutierrez for assignment

The San Francisco Giants designated right-hander Juan Gutierrez for assignment Thursday.

Analysis:

Gutierrez posted a 3.12 ERA, .228 BAA and 10 holds in the first half of 2014 but pitched almost exclusively in low-leverage situations after the All-Star break. He still finished with 61 appearances, fifth-most on the team, but clearly the Giants had no intention of going to arbitration with the 31-year-old.
