Report: Rays expected to DFA Jose Molina
Brad Rempel-USA TODAY Sports
The Tampa Bay Rays will reportedly designate veteran catcher Jose Molina for assignment Thursday in an effort to clear room on their 40-man roster.
Molina, 39, is set to earn $2.75 million next season in the second of a two-year deal signed last winter. Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reported the expected transaction.
The defensive-minded Molina appeared in 80 games for the Rays in 2014, but offered little in terms of offense. In three seasons with Tampa Bay, the 15-year veteran has hit .213/.271/.286 over 281 games.
Molina was ranked among the top catchers in pitch framing last season, according to StatCorner.com.
If the Rays DFA Molina as expected, the team will have 10 days to either trade, release, or place him on waivers.
