Report: White Sox designate Ronald Belisario for assignment

Dennis Wierzbicki / USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago White Sox reportedly designated right-hander Ronald Belisario for assignment Thursday, according to Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune, just hours before the deadline for clubs to finalize their 40-man rosters in advance of the Rule 5 draft.

Belisario signed with the White Sox last winter but endured a miserable first season in Chicago, crafting a 5.56 ERA with a 1.45 WHIP over 62 relief appearances. The White Sox will likely attempt to outright Belisario to the minor leagues - or release him entirely - though other teams are eligible to claim him off waivers for the next seven days.

Belisario was removed from the 40-man to open up a spot for one of the club's prospects eligible to be taken at next month's Rule 5 draft. Any player facing his fourth or fifth career Rule 5 draft (depending on his age when he signed his first contract) not yet on his team's 40-man roster as of midnight will be exposed to the draft.
