Blue Jays introduce Russell Martin: 'He's a winner,' GM says

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Toronto Blue Jays formally introduced catcher Russell Martin to local media Thursday at Rogers Centre, days after finalizing a five-year, $82-million deal with the three-time All-Star.

Rhapsodizing in both English and French, general manager Alex Anthopoulos praised the 31-year-old catcher's diverse skill set and lauded Martin's impeccable track record of reaching the postseason.

Martin, who attended high school in Quebec and also opted for a bilingual press conference, noted that the club's willingness to include a fifth year on his contract contributed to his decision to sign with Toronto.

A nine-year veteran, Martin is expected to assume a leadership role with the Blue Jays, especially among the club's relatively young pitching staff.

Martin also expressed his excitement about heading to Montreal this spring for a pair of exhibition games against the Cincinnati Reds in the province he grew up in.
