Report: White Sox eyeing Melky Cabrera

Reuters

Eager to bolster their underwhelming lineup, the Chicago White Sox are mulling a pursuit of veteran outfielder Melky Cabrera, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

The White Sox shipped Alejandro de Aza to the Baltimore Orioles in August, creating a void both atop the lineup and in left field for which Cabrera seems to be a natural fit. The club also scored just 4.07 runs per game in 2014 - a figure just below the American League average - and would benefit greatly from the addition of the veteran, who boasted a 124 OPS+ over the last four seasons and is one of the top bats available via free agency.

The 30-year-old, however, remains tied to draft-pick compensation after rejecting a $15.3-million qualifying offer from the Toronto Blue Jays, and is reportedly seeking a $50-million deal this winter. He hit .301/.351/.458 with 16 home runs and 35 doubles over 139 games before suffering a season-ending avulsion fracture in his finger Sept. 5.
