Mets GM: Matt Harvey to open season in rotation

The New York Mets intend to be cautious with Matt Harvey's workload next season as he returns from Tommy John surgery, but general manager Sandy Alderson still expects the 25-year-old to be in the rotation on Opening Day.

Alderson added that the club's goal is to have the young right-hander pitching through the playoffs, and that the Mets will take measures to curtail innings during the regular season.

If Harvey proves healthy enough to crack the rotation out of spring training, as Alderson expects, the former All-Star would be the obvious choice to start Opening Day against the Texas Rangers. Harvey, however, didn't log any rehabilitation outings in the minor leagues last season and hasn't taken the mound for the Mets since Aug. 24, 2013.
