Rays' Longoria left Saturday's game to watch birth of son via phone from Japan

Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Evan Longoria had his best game of the Japan All-Star Series in Sunday's 6-1 win.

But he experienced one of the greatest moments of his life during a loss the previous day.

Longoria retired to the clubhouse late in Saturday's game after learning his fiancee Jaime Edmondson was in labor with their second child at a hospital in Arizona.

Longoria was able to witness the birth of his first son from inside the Tokyo Dome.

"I got to see it all on FaceTime," he told MLB.com. "It was a pretty cool moment."

Longoria said his fiancee urged him to go on the MLB tour across the Pacific, despite her Nov. 18 due date. The couple were hoping he'd be back in time for the birth, and Longoria said he's been tethered to his phone in anticipation.

"I'm excited for the rest of the days here, I'm going to enjoy them," he said, adding that it was a big relief knowing baby and mother are healthy and doing well. "But I'm very excited to get back home, too."
