Report: Twins have inquired about Justin Masterson

The Minnesota Twins will once again look to free agency to bolster their rotation after a slew of signings last offseason didn't prove totally effective.

General manager Terry Ryan opted to stay away from top-tier arms last season, signing Ricky Nolasco, Phil Hughes and Mike Pelfrey instead. Ryan is expected to do the same once again, as the Twins have most recently asked about right-hander Justin Masterson, according to Darren Wolfson of ESPN

Masterson is no stranger to the American League Central, having pitched for the Cleveland Indians in each of the last six seasons. The 29-year-old hasn't exactly fared well at Target Field over his career, posting a 4.63 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in 46 2/3 innings.

It was a difficult 2014 season for Masterson. After going 4-6 with a 5.51 ERA in 19 starts with Cleveland, he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals, where he went 3-3 with a 7.04 ERA and was demoted to the bullpen.

There's been no shortage of interest in Masterson this offseason - the Indians, Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox have all reportedly checked in.
