Report: Rays expected to make more deals over next few days

Steve Nesius / USA TODAY Sports

The Tampa Bay Rays likely aren't done dealing after having already shipped away pitchers Jeremy Hellickson and Cesar Ramos in separate moves earlier in the month.

General manager Matthew Silverman is expected to make more transactions by Thursday in order to open up spots on the 40-man roster, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times

Topkin mentions infielder Sean Rodriguez and catcher Jose Molina as the most likely trade candidates, with reliever Brandon Gomes as another option.

Rodriguez appeared in 96 games for the Rays last season at six different positions, slashing .211/.258/.443. While the 29-year-old hit a career-high 12 home runs, it came at the expense of his average, which reached a career low. Rodriguez is arbitration-eligible and expected to make $2 million in 2015, according to MLB Trade Rumors

Molina, who is owed $2.75 million next season, hit .178/.230/.187 in parts of 80 games in 2014. Topkin says that the Rays might consider swallowing the salary next season to free up a roster spot if they're unable to trade him.
