The Oakland Athletics added to their starting pitching depth Saturday by signing left-hander Rudy Owens to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training.

“I’m excited for the opportunity,” Owens told Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle. “I have a couple buddies that are in the organization and when we played against them this year in Triple A I talked to them about it and they said they loved the organization and it seemed like a good spot to be in.”

Owens was outrighted from the Houston Astros 40-man roster in early October, becoming a free agent. The 26-year-old has one major league start under his belt, where he allowed five runs off nine hits and two walks against the Seattle Mariners in May.

In 25 appearances with Triple-A Oklahoma City last season, Owens managed a 8-5 record to go with a 4.33 ERA and 104 strikeouts in 135 innings.
