Report: Astros checked in on Hanley Ramirez, seeking help on left side of infield

Jayne Kamin-Oncea / USA TODAY Sports

The Houston Astros have an abundance of young talent coming up through their farm system, but the team appears to be exploring veteran free-agent options.

Rosenthal believes the Astros are likely just doing their due diligence on Hanley Ramirez, who is seeking a massive long-term contract. He suggests Houston is more apt to look for a short-term solution while its prospects continue to develop.

Jed Lowrie, Chase Headley and Stephen Drew seem like more realistic short-term options for the Astros on the left side of the infield.

The fact the Astros explored Ramirez as an option is intriguing, however, as the team is clearly shifting its philosophy from rebuilding to becoming potential contenders.
