White Sox's Jose Abreu wins AL Rookie of the Year

Jerry Lai / USA TODAY Sports

Chicago White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu was named the 2014 American League Rookie of the Year.

The 27-year-old was the unanimous choice, beating out New York Yankees reliever Dellin Betances and Los Angeles Angels starter Matt Shoemaker.

Abreu's historic rookie season made him the obvious choice for the award despite strong performances from both Betances and Shoemaker. Abreu became the fourth player all-time - and first since Albert Pujols in 2001 - to hit at least 30 doubles, 30 home runs and 100 RBIs in their rookie season.

The Cuban defector, who inked a six-year, $68-million deal with the White Sox in October of 2013, slashed .317/.383/.581 with 36 home runs and 107 RBIs in 145 games.
