Blue Jays claim Andy Dirks off waivers from Tigers

The Toronto Blue Jays have claimed outfielder Andy Dirks off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.

Dirks missed the entire 2014 season recovering from back surgery and nursing an injured hamstring. The Tigers confirmed the transaction Friday.

The 28-year-old hit .256/.323/.363 with nine homers and seven steals during his most productive campaign in 2013.

Dirks will likely compete for a platoon role with the Blue Jays, who could have a major hole to fill in their outfield with the departure of Colby Rasmus and potential loss of impending free agent Melky Cabrera.
