Report: Cubs to hire Joe Maddon as manager; agent denies deal is done

Kim Klement / USA TODAY Sports

Joe Maddon's agent denied Wednesday evening that his client has finalized a deal to become the new manager of the Chicago Cubs, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.

An earlier report from Jon Heyman of CBS Sports suggested the Cubs were prepared to hire Maddon to be their new manager less than one week after the 60-year-old opted out of his contract with the Tampa Bay Rays. According to Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal, however, the Cubs may just be waiting until the conclusion of the World Series to confirm the deal.

Rick Renteria, the Cubs' incumbent manager, stated two days ago he intends to "continue to focus my offseason preparation on ... bringing a championship to Chicago" and his agent indicated Wednesday he has not been informed of any change in his role with the club.
